Children who wear soft
contact lenses are not at risk of their eyesight deteriorating faster than if they use another corrective option, according to a new study.
Johnson & Johnson Vision Care - maker of
1 Day Acuvue - commissioned the research that studied the eyesight of almost 500 children aged between eight and 11 who had myopic vision.
Some of the children wore glasses and some had been prescribed contact lenses.
The research found no "clinically meaningful difference between the two forms of vision correction for the treatment of myopia", Optician website reported.
Johnson & Johnson UK`s director of professional affairs David Ruston said children as young as eight are "as capable as teenagers at wearing and caring for contact lenses and their parents should be offered, where appropriate, the option of contact lens wear after an eye examination".
UV blocking, allergy-safe 1 Day Acuvue contact lenses are worn once then thrown away.
